Welcome to school year 2005/2006! Alconbury Elementary School has approximately 291 students in grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. We have an experienced staff with most having master's degrees. We offer programs in music, physical education, art, and host nation culture and customs. We also offer special education, speech and language, English as a second language and gifted education services for our students who qualify. Our campus includes four buildings, an outdoor playground, information center, computer lab, and all classrooms are connected to our LAN with Internet access. We have an active school improvement program and we welcome your participation and suggestions. We look forward to meeting you and working with your children!
· Starting School – When registration is complete by 1100 on a regular school day, your child may begin school the next day. If registration is after 1100, your child will not start the next school day, but rather the day after. If registration occurs over the winter holidays or during spring break, your child will begin school on the Tuesday after the break is over. This helps school personnel ensure that teachers are notified of the incoming student, and for desks, books, and other materials to be made ready for your child so they can feel welcome and included from their first moments at AES.
· See the teacher first policy and classroom visits: The school strongly urges parents to see the teacher first if there is a concern or problem prior to contacting the principal. When visiting a classroom or conferring with a teacher, parents are asked to make arrangements in advance with the teacher. This is best for the school's educational program and students because it ensures that instruction and learning are not interrupted by surprise visits. Volunteers and visitors, please remember to stop in the main office to sign in and pick up a visitor's pass.
·
Safety Concerns:
- Please say goodbye to your child outside of the building unless volunteering to walk your child's class to his/her room in the morning. Please use the main entrances only. When picking up your child, please arrange with him/her where you will meet outside the building and make sure you pick them up promptly. Please note: you must notify your child's teacher in writing if your child will go home a different way than usual. We will only accept changes made over the telephone in an emergency and only after verification of the caller's identity.
- As a security precaution and to ensure the safety of your child, be sure to stop by the office and sign your child out if you are picking him/her up during school hours. Your child will be paged to meet you in the office. Also, be sure to sign your child back in when he/she returns. Student safety and security is always the highest priority at AES.
-
Morning arrival supervision for students who ride a bus begins when the first bus arrives. Students who walk or are brought to school should arrive between 0815 and 0825. Students enter classrooms at 0825. School is dismissed at 1500 for all students. The school is currently seeking volunteers for supervision on the playground during morning arrival time.
- Parking: The street leading to the school is closed to traffic between 0800 to 0830 and from 1445 to 1515. Please observe these times so that your vehicle does not interfere with or block the buses.
· Extra-curricular activities: Many extra-curricular activities are organized at AES and meet after school. Examples of these activities include: computer club, art club, children's choir, and many others. More information will be forthcoming on these activities in upcoming parent newsletters.
· Bus concerns: Questions or concerns about school buses are handled through the bus office. You may reach them at extension 268-3891.
· School Lunch Program: AAFES provides the school lunch program at AES. Lunch tickets are sold at the customer service area of the exchange. Many students bring their lunch to school. Parents are welcome to assist with lunch monitoring duties during lunch and recess. All children who attend AES on a full-day schedule must bring a lunch or lunch ticket each school day. This is an important parental responsibility. We welcome parents to eat lunch with their children and special booths are available for families to dine together. Price of a student lunch will be $2.05 and adult lunches will cost $3.30. A free or reduced price lunch program is offered at AES. To see if you qualify for this program, pick up an application in the school office.
· Before and After School Care: The School-Age Program on Alconbury provides before and after school child care. They may be reached at extension 268-3604 or 3602 or in person at the Youth Services building.
· Employment Opportunities: If you would like to be considered for employment with the school as a lunch monitor, teacher, education aide, supply technician, substitute teacher, learning specialist, secretary, computer clerk, etc., please see the school secretary. There is always a need for volunteer arrival/departure monitors and lunch monitors. Please check with the office staff if you would like to be a part of the AES team. |
